FLAMENCO WEB. Claude Worms

"Los Cantes del Marqués is an exceptional work that will go down in the history of instrumental flamenco."

BABELIA-EL PAIS 18/04/2025 Fermín Lobatón

The cello as a solo instrument, despite its long coexistence with flamenco, seems to be a challenge at first. Because how to marry its natural gravity and depth with the more rhythmic and lighter styles of the genre? The question is solved as soon as we start listening to it, with alegrías that exude the rhythm and gracefulness of the style. Something similar happens with the guajira or the garrotín, in any case, the interpretation is never limited to a simple reproduction of the rhythmic or melodic structures of each style, which is faced as a creation / recreation that respects these structures, but with a freedom that is nourished by the exploration of the versatility, richness of timbre and wide range of sound of Marqués.

La Opinión de Murcia 11/08/2024 Marco Albaladejo Alajarín

“ Stars coming down from the sky to the mine: these are the winners of the Cante festival...For his part, José 'El Marqués' once again displayed his sensitivity for farrucas and guajira airs, whispering melodies with his cello, which ended up earning him the Filón award.”

Aqui Madrid 1/10/2023

Teresa Fernández Herrera

“Very special mention for the veteran cellist José Luis López, maestro, the flamenco cello par excellence. José Luis López “El Marqués” with that physical appearance and those manners of a Viennese virtuoso musician of Jewish descent from other and these times.”

Angel Martinez

“On this trip they are fortunate to share the stage with José Luis López Fernández, founder of the Camerata Flamenco Project, who brings with his cello the atmosphere and melody, so that no note is left without musical context. José Luis is the embrace that amalgamates the guitar of the young Sevillian with the voice of Sandra Carrasco.”

Zoco Flamenco 30/10/2023

“Playing like children, the guitar of the great David de Arahal ... the cello of the master José Luis López, floating and daring...”

diariodeJerez.es 06/03/2017

Juan Garrido “Flamenco is present in ‘Entre dos aguas’ that created for the history of universal music Paco de Lucia. The delight is immense, especially when the cello of José Luis López takes presence..

diariodeJerez.es 27/02/2014 Fran Pereira - XVIII Festival de Jerez

“...the caña and farruca with which he closes the show to the rhythm of the impressive cello of Jose Luís López, a sublime musician in everything he does...”

Web magazine La Flamenca 16/12/2014

Rocío de la Villa

“Cellist José Luis López Fernández has found his own identity as a soloist, weaving a particular relationship between flamenco and this instrument. He has known how to offer this art through the melody of the strings of his cello.”

Robert Johnson / The Star-Ledger (New York) - Flamenco Festival USA.

“This year's festival opened Thursday with a gala that highlighted a performance of an extraordinary “Farruca,” performed to the cello music of Jose Luis Lopez, which unites the gypsy traditions of southern Spain with those of Eastern Europe..”

deflamenco.com Manuel Moraga - Festival de Jerez “The musical arrangements and the variations of Lorca's popular songs are not to be missed. They are, in my opinion, authentic works of art that we owe to José Luis López among others.... To highlight just one passage, the version of the “Nana de Sevilla” is anthological.”

nj.com Robert Johnson / The Star-Ledger (New York) -

Flamenco Festival USA “Vamos al Tiroteo” combines an evocation of Spanish folklore with modern aspirations. The music is exquisite, the combination of cello and guitar creating a shimmering atmosphere.”

washingtonpost.com Paula Durbin -

Flamenco Festival USA “.... Rafaela Carrasco danced a mesmerizing farruca duet with the magnificent cellist José Luis Lopez.”

ABC Newspaper

Julio Bravo / correspondent in New York - Flamenco Festival USA “... for her part, Rafaela Carrasco showed off her elegance and sensuality, as well as giving a risky and beautiful farruca, accompanied only by the excellent cello of José Luis López”.

danzahoy.com Célida P. Villalón (U.S.A.)

“The accompaniment, however, could not have been more serious in the magnificent performance of cellist José Luis López.”

inmusica.es Antonio Aguirre

“Jose Luis Lopez brings virtuosity and versatility that does not detract from his restlessness to delve into worlds such as flamenco.”
